The UCF Booers controversy is now becoming a defining conversation across the communications industry, with agencies increasingly debating the role of AI literacy in hiring, strategy, and future workforce development.
UCF Booers Incident Sparks New AI Hiring Policy at 5W
May 13, 2026 — 5W AI Communications today announced a formal no-hire policy for communications, marketing, and content candidates who exhibit hostility toward artificial intelligence. The policy is effective immediately.
The decision follows the viral May 8 commencement at the University of Central Florida's College of Arts and Humanities and Nicholson School of Communication and Media, where graduating communications, journalism, advertising, and PR majors booed Gloria Caulfield — vice president of strategic alliances at Tavistock Development Company and president of the Lake Nona Institute — for saying that "the rise of artificial intelligence is the next industrial revolution." One graduate yelled "AI sucks!" during her speech. Caulfield paused, smiled, called the boos "passion," and finished her remarks.
"5W will not hire any graduate who booed Gloria Caulfield on May 8. We will not hire any communications candidate who treats AI as the enemy," said Ronn Torossian, founder and chairman of 5W AI Communications. "Caulfield was right. The graduates who booed her were wrong. The labor market is about to settle the disagreement very quickly. 5W is going public with its position so the deans, the trade press, and the candidates themselves know exactly where the bar is."
The 5W AI Power User Study
The policy is anchored in the firm's just-completed 5W AI Power User Study — the largest behavioral survey of American AI sentiment 5W has fielded. The study identified the widest behavioral divide currently measurable in American public opinion:
- Daily AI users: +57 favorable on AI
- Everyone else: −42
- A 99-point gap — wider than party, race, gender, or age
- Frequency of AI use predicts AI sentiment 3x more strongly than any traditional demographic
The boos at UCF were not protest, Torossian said. They were the data on camera.
"This is not a culture war. It is a labor market," Torossian said. "A communicator who sits in the −42 column cannot build brand citation inside ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google AI Overviews. They cannot execute Generative Engine Optimization. They cannot do the work our clients pay us for. Hiring them would be malpractice toward the clients who hired us."
UCF Booers and the Future of AI Communications Hiring
The Policy
5W's no-hire policy applies at every level — junior, mid-level, and senior hires across all departments. Every candidate is now screened for AI fluency before evaluation of writing, account management, or creative skill. The firm's standard screening question:
"Show me a brand winning inside ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity right now. Walk me through the strategy."
Candidates who cannot answer with specificity will not advance. Candidates who express ideological hostility toward AI will be disqualified at the screen.
Torossian stated unequivocally that 100% of communications professionals hired by 5W in 2026 will be required to be AI intellectually curious — not tolerant, not neutral, but curious.
A Direct Word to UCF
5W has hired thousands of communicators across its 20-plus years of operation, including directly from UCF's Nicholson School of Communication and Media.
"I know Nicholson, I have hired its alumni into senior roles at brands you have heard of," Torossian said. "I am telling you, as a buyer of this school's output, that something has changed. The May 8 video is not a one-off. It is a curriculum failure on public display. The deans owe Gloria Caulfield a public apology — and they owe the firms that hire from their pipeline a serious conversation about what they intend to graduate next May."
Gloria Caulfield Praised as a Model Senior Communicator
Caulfield drew widespread praise from communications professionals for her composure during the incident.
"Caulfield is the senior communicator every Fortune 500 wishes was on its bench," Torossian said. "She took a live ambush in front of thousands of strangers and a camera, did not flinch, did not apologize, and reclaimed the stage with a single word. That is exactly the muscle a chief communications officer needs the next time their company gets quote-tweeted into a crisis cycle. We owe her flowers. UCF owes her an apology."
Industry Context Around the UCF Booers Debate
5W's policy declaration arrives at a moment of widening visibility gaps between traditional public relations and the emerging field of AI Communications. As consumer research, journalism workflows, recruiter behavior, and B2B buying journeys increasingly shift toward ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, the firms positioned to grow brand citation inside those engines are pulling ahead of competitors still operating on legacy earned-media frameworks.
"Citation share is the new market share," Torossian said. "Every brand we serve is now competing for it. The communicators we hire either ship inside that operating model or they do not contribute. There is no third option."
The 5W AI Power User Study is available to media, clients, and academic researchers upon request.
Closing
The no-hire policy is effective immediately at 5W AI Communications. Torossian said he expects similar policies to be adopted across the global communications industry within 24 months.
"By 2027, every serious communications, marketing, and content firm in this country will have the same policy. We are just the first to say it out loud. Send Gloria Caulfield flowers. Send UCF an invoice. And do not hire the booers."
