Volume 10 of our Luxury Island AI Visibility Index Series — released this month with Haute Black — is the cleanest proof yet that the discovery channel for the world’s wealthiest travelers has moved. Here’s what the data says, and what every luxury operator should do this quarter.
I’ve been telling clients the same thing for eighteen months. The discovery channel has moved. The wealthiest buyers in the world are not starting in print. They are not starting on Instagram. They are starting in a single typed sentence to ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity — and the destinations those AI engines surface first are the destinations they book.
Most operators heard it. Some moved. The rest are about to find out the cost of waiting.
The Luxury Island AI Visibility Index 2026, which 5W just released in editorial partnership with Haute Black, is the data that ends that argument. It is Volume 10 of our AI Visibility Index Series — the same research franchise that has now mapped the AI citation landscape across luxury real estate, medical aesthetics, South Florida new development, and now ultra-luxury island travel.
What the Luxury Island AI Visibility Index Data Says
Here is what the data says.
Saint-Tropez leads at 10.0% AI citation share. Amalfi Coast 8.0%. Mykonos 7.0%. Ibiza and Formentera 6.0%. Porto Cervo and Sardinia 5.0%.
Comporta has more than doubled its citation share since 2023. Montenegro has tripled since 2022. Both are now the AI-surfaced answer to where does the quiet-luxury crowd go for summer.
Santorini no longer ranks. The most photographed island on the planet has been pushed out of the top 25 entirely. AI engines now caveat it — known for crowds, consider alternatives — when UHNW travelers ask about Greek islands. Overtourism reporting has out-weighed property editorial. The most-cited destination of the last decade is now a negative-citation destination in 2026.
If that doesn’t tell you the channel has moved, nothing will.
What Every Luxury Operator Should Do This Quarter
Stop Spending on Channels AI Doesn’t Read
One — stop spending on channels AI doesn’t read. Tourism board airport advertising, out-of-home, and most print are generating effectively zero AI citation share. Every dollar there in 2026 is a dollar that will not show up in the answer box your buyer is actually using.
Fund Named-Property Editorial
Two — fund named-property editorial in the publications AI engines weight. Four Seasons Mykonos has already generated roughly 40 substantive placements since announcement. The hotel hasn’t opened yet. The AI answers for “Mykonos 2026” are already moving in its favor. That is what compounding citation looks like.
Invest Behind the Advisor, Not Just the Destination
Three — invest behind the advisor, not just the destination. AI answers are now surfacing which concierge handles private islands, best travel advisor for African safari. The advisor network is becoming a discrete AI-visible category in its own right. Virtuoso-affiliated advisor content is weighted by AI models above consumer travel journalism. The properties that lock in advisor relationships and fund advisor-led editorial own the citation footprint downstream.
Build for the Anti-Crowd Buyer
Four — build for the anti-crowd buyer. 76% of UHNW clients are now seeking shoulder-season or anti-crowd travel. AI has absorbed the filter and is routing accordingly. Paros, Antiparos, Comporta, Montenegro, Puglia — these are the names rising in the index, and they are rising because they are the names buyers are asking for.
Move Now
Five — move now. The luxury travel market is projected to exceed $1.2 trillion by 2027. 67% of Virtuoso advisors forecast increased demand. 55% expect clients to spend more per trip. The wealth is moving. The buying intent is moving. The discovery channel is moving. The first operators in are compounding an advantage their competitors will spend years trying to close.
The Mediterranean summer of 2026 will belong to the destinations that understood this in time to act.
We built the AI Visibility Index Series to give luxury operators the map. We built the Generative Engine Optimization practice at 5W to help them move on it.

The 24-month window to own AI citation share in luxury island travel is open right now. It will not be open for long.
